Tybalt deMercutio,
Captain of the Palace Guard
Brief History:
His mother suffered a tragic accident while she was pregnant with him, resulting in a birth defect that left him blind, and her dead at childbirth. The newborn Tybalt was given into the care of his aunt when his father left to fight in the First War, and returned home with land, a title, and stumps where his wings used to be. It was the grant of title and land, more than anything, that allowed Tybalt to keep his wings. The warrior tradition of both his people and his family was handed down to him by his father, and he mastered the Devilish martial arts at a young age, as well as a few other weapons. When Tybalt reached maturity, he respectfully declined his father's inheritance and family's newfound legacy as a peer of the realm, preferring to enter into the Elite on his own merit. He passed with flying colors, and was placed among the Palace Guard despite being blind.
During the Second War, Tybalt lost his father, who chose to fight despite his missing limbs. He asked to be allowed to fight to avenge his father, and was granted a place on the battlefield. Afterwards, he returned to his position in the Palace Guard, quietly turning down titles and offers for promotion for his actions. When the captain of the Palace Guard was killed during the incident that resulted in the Queen's exile, he was given the rank and privilege, having already proven himself a capable leader and fighter in the past. Though there were some questions to his capability, Tybalt has proven the wisdom in his appointment. It is one of Tybalt's life goals to wipe away the dishonor of he and his men of having failed to protect the Queen and those in the Palace.
Basic Personality:
Tybalt is very pensive and displays and ability to think before he speaks, an uncommon trait in a Devil, and he generally prefers to be left alone, although this tendency stems from the fact that he is rarely ever needed unless the situation is getting out of control. He is a competent leader and confident fighter, with a record for getting the job done and following orders. He has been in the Guard for many centuries and knows the Palace and court as well as any courtier, though he maintains a distance from the court. Because of his long years of service, he has a more easy-going and relaxed disposition than many of his people, and graced with a sense of humor to get through even the most catastrophic debacles that the courtiers and nobles manage to get themselves into.
Tybalt realizes that many mistakes were made in the Guard by the old captain, which aided in the exile of the Queen from Hell, and wants nothing more than to redeem his men - and himself. Because of this, he can seem rigid and unbending, tolerating nothing short of perfection from himself and those in his Guard.
Powers/Abilities:
Wings - Though tattered, his wings are still in perfect working order.
Char'Sarei - Learned from his father and his father's friends, Tybalt is a master in this style.
Enhanced Senses - Because of his blindness, Tybalt's other four senses have become far more acute, especially hearing and touch. Relying on his hearing and sense of touch, Tybalt can react and move as though he had sight, and in fact, there are some that don't realize his blindness at first. He can feel minute changes in air pressure and wind, as well as the subtle differences in walls, skin, and other such things. His hearing is extremely acute, and he can hear both higher and lower frequencies than most others of his kind.
Polearms - Another skill learned from his very martial childhood, Tybalt has incorporated their use in his Char'Sarei, often with a long dagger. Combined with flight, this makes Tybalt an opponent to be reckoned with.
Weaknesses:
Sharp Tongued - Though not as problematic as most of his people, Tybalt does actually speak his mind without thinking.
Blindness - Caused by a birth defect, Tybalt has been blind all his life. While he can operate like any other demon, tasks that require sight are beyond him.
Hearing - Because his other senses were heightened to counteract his blindness, Tybalt is very vulnerable to loud noises. If exposed to prolongued noise and/or loud sounds, he can become disoriented and even loose the ability to navigate his surroundings for a short time.
Honor of the Guard - Tybalt is determined to win back the honor of the Palace Guard, and will stop at nothing if he sees a way to achieve that goal. He will push himself, and his men, nearly to the breaking point in order to prove their worth and can be very sensitive to criticism against himself or his men in regards to their capabilities.
Magical Items:
Glass Orb - This is the center piece to the set given to all in the Palace Guard. Guards are given lesser orbs, and can project a mental picture of the happenings of wherever they might be. It is limited to the mind's eye only, and has no sound, though it does chime when his presence is needed.
Non-Magical Items:
Ring - A heavy, silver ring with an emerald set into it, it was his father's ring and had his family's crest etched into the gem.
Naginata - Tybalt's weapon of choice for most combat, he usually has it with him wherever he's going. He has even been known to use it as a type of seeing-eye cane.
Dagger - Just barely short enough to be considered a dagger, Tybalt carries it with him at all times, especially if he's to be without his naginata.
Cane - A simple piece of bamboo, it can extend into a bo staff should Tybalt need it.
Appearance:
At 5'8", Tybalt is taller than most of his people, which presents its own minor problems. He has a muscled physique, though retains the Devil's rather lanky build, and maintains it with daily training and workouts. His skin is a dark, dark purple, nearing the colors of deep shadows, and covered with nearly invisible sigils and runes. He has two curved horns on his forehead, clawed hands and feet, and a prehensile, spaded tail. His wings are very muscled, with thicker-than-average bones, making them more powerful, and though the membrane is tattered, he can still fly unimpeded. His hip-length hair is a dark, almost black, charcoal grey, and generally worn away from his face in a topknot. With his very dark appearance, his milky white eyes are very obvious. He can usually be seen dressed in the uniform of the Palace Guard, though he prefers to wear tradition waist wraps and/or hakama and haori, all of which are black or in varying shades of gray.
